After a month of May without much breaking news, but rather with local releases or debuts of high midrange phones, the time has come to compile all the data and see how we stand with the top 10 trending phones for May 2021 Perhaps the biggest launch in May was that of the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip, or the local arrival of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. Huawei flagships are expected, and Oppo launched the Reno6 series, which fits more in the high midrange area. I look at the Mobilissimo trending from last May and see that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were dominated by Samsung and Huawei was on 4th.
Now Huawei appears in the top with only one phone and that somewhere at the tail of the ranking, while Samsung takes fewer positions and none of them won medals. Even more shocking is that on the podium there are phones with dual cameras and relatively small diagonals, while the star is a phone with a very high price and which follows a special edition that was not available for sale anywhere. 10. Oppo Find X3 Pro
The first appearance of the Oppo Find X3 Pro in such a list comes in May 2021 itself. We would have expected it to appear earlier, but since it was launched it has been rather in the top 15 and took 11-12 places each. It is still the only phone on the market that can boast of integrating a real microscope on board, with 50X magnification. It has one of the best screens on the market and an ultrawide camera matched only by the one on the OnePlus 9 Pro. It is also helped by those small PR fireworks, such as the best promotional spot (and with the biggest budget) in recent years, as well as the ringtones composed by Hans Zimmer. Not to mention the polarizing "crater" design of the back that has sparked a lot of discussion.
9. Huawei P30 Pro
I would have said that this phone is a surprise in the top 10 in May, if it did not also appear in it in March and April 2021. It is true that it has now dropped a few positions. This phone is now a "perfect deal", combining some of the excellent Huawei + Leica optics, with a capable periscopic 5X optical zoom, but also an OLED screen that does well in 2021. It still has Google, Gmail and Play services Blinds on board. The reason for its increase in popularity is the amount of good price offers practiced here. I look at Compari.ro and see it at around 2,300 lei and I seem to remember a discount campaign that brought it even below 2,000 lei. This explains its popularity.

8. OnePlus 9 Pro
OnePlus 9 Pro has every chance that at the end of 2021 it will be presented with the most powerful and high-quality ultrawide camera on board. Its filming also seemed special to me, both in terms of clarity and stabilization, and the Macro capture also makes a pleasant impression. It charges very quickly and has louder speakers than those on the Mi 11 and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The initial price was a bit high compared to its predecessors, and the public's very high expectations related to Hasselblad were not fully met. And at Zoom, he still had work to do against his big rivals.

7. Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G
Immediately after the smallest S21 comes the S21+, increasing the diagonal to 6.7 inches. Autonomy is OK again for video playback and we also appreciate the stereo acoustic capture when filming. It does not overheat, and the Exynos 2100 is a success and a successor to the Exynos 990 that solves its problems. One UI 3.1 sells the phone on its own, and the S20+'s too-bright colors are fixed here. It has excellent stabilization when filming on the go, it is only good for vlogging and through the lens of the front camera. Finally, we also have new Portrait Studio options needed for more professional, more CV selfies. It looks very good even on matte black.

6. Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
Compact phones seem to be the reason for this top, and after the iPhone 12 and ZenFone 8 comes the smallest S21. With its mignon nature and purple hue, it attracted a lot of female audience. Not to mention that the purple version also has that "bronze" or even "rose gold" colored frame and camera module. The Exynos 2100 processor gets rid of the throttling on the S20 series, and the phone performs excellently in gaming, has a very good Night Mode and stabilizes effectively when filming. The colors are more realistic, more correctly calibrated than on the S20. It's not bad at video playback, battery test or screen brightness either. It has become cheaper and there are also quite a few resealed products at a good price.

5. OnePlus 9
Another new entry in this top is the OnePlus 9, the Lite version of the OnePlus 9 Pro, only keeping the excellent ultrawide camera. It's bizarre that it wasn't in the top in April, but I think the Poco F3 took its place. It is positioned as a rival for the Xiaomi Mi 11, with extras for the battery, screen and ultrawide camera. It shoots as "crisp" and detailed as the OP9 Pro, has very fast charging, and gamers will be totally delighted with the performance. We are working with electronic stabilization here and not optical, but it is a satisfactory one. Note the wide palette of colors in the photo capture, probably an attribute triggered by the collaboration with Hasselblad, the company that put the first camera on the Moon. Had some really good deals at Quickmobile.

4. Samsung Galay S21 Ultra 5G
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the best equipped phone in this top in terms of zoom, that's for sure. We left it in the 2nd place in April 2021 and now we find it down to the 4th place. It has some big pluses over the other two S21 models, from WiFi 6E, to the stylus holder, the car key function, but also the camera with 10X optical zoom. It manages to reduce the size of the huge photo module on the S20 Ultra, it also solves the autonomy problem, having an adaptable refresh rate, which can drop to very low values when displaying static content. Exynos 2100 is clearly superior to Exynos 900 in terms of temperature management and consumption. The stereo is more pleasant than on the S21 and S21+, and the sound gives the feeling that it surrounds you, like a surround sound. The stylus opened up new ways of use, and the photos were flawless during the day. And the night generated landmark photos. Also fixed closeup capture and focus vs. S20 Ultra.

3. Apple iPhone 12
On the 2nd place in March and the 1st place in April, the iPhone 12 now descends to the last place of the podium. It continues the legacy of the iPhone 11, which was the best-selling phone in the world in the year following its release. This time it seems that it doesn't shine as strongly, somewhat dragged down by autonomy. I am still shocked by the presence of two phones with dual cameras in the top 10 for May. The advantage is that there are solid cameras here, excellent for filming 4K at 60 FPS, with top stabilization and well-calibrated colors. The sex appeal of the blue shade should not be underestimated, however strange it may seem. And the Apple A14 processor was ready to be future proof for 4-5 years and the phone was clearly more compact than many flagships on the market.

2. ASUS Zenfone 8
The second new entry in this top is also the only phone released in May, the mini ASUS Zenfone 8. Practically, if you want to buy a powerful and compact phone, you are obliged to go for this model. It has a diagonal under 6 inches, a rarity nowadays, it keeps the audio jack and has well-calibrated stereo speakers. It also has a high refresh rate, top performance, a lot of RAM (16 GB on the unit we tested) and maybe there are some objections to the dual rear camera. The feeling was sometimes that we have a high midrange camera, not necessarily a flagship. Strictly as a gaming device, daily driver, media consumption and everything you want, it worked well. The autonomy could have increased, however.

1. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
A huge rise in May for this Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, which jumps from 6th place in April to 1st in May. And in March, it was on the 12th place. In the meantime, it received a debut in our country and a detailed Mobilissimo review. It certainly has personality, through the lens of that huge rear camera module, which also hides a secondary screen, but also the new Samsung GN2 star sensor of 50 megapixels. It was the biggest sensor on the market for a few weeks, until Sharp came with one more. In our tests it confirmed zoom, colors and details, offered excellent performance and very fast charging, both wired and wireless. It's the most powerful phone released by Xiaomi in 2021 and despite the price, everyone wants to hold one in their hand, if only to feel the ceramic back, a rarity these days. The price can only go down. At the moment it is no longer available locally, being listed on Mi-Home.ro at the beginning for 6,999 lei.
