Huawei Mate XS Review after a month of use: The foldable business that gets rid of extra devices

Time 22/05/2022 By myhoneybakedfeedback

You have probably deduced if you have been following us for some time that we have two types of reviews at Mobilissimo: standard and long terminal. The latter come some time after the product is launched and focus on its long -term use, a few weeks or a month. The same is true of Huawei Mate XS, in which I spent the last month. The product costs around 11,000 lei and find out all our impressions below.

Huawei Mate XS, review after a month of use:

Design

I got used to the format faster than I expected and I honestly tell you that I gave up the iPad Mini for this device. The satisfaction is great when you fold and move the screen and especially when you press that physical button, which does "click" to open the screen. You can operate the comfortable and folded and full phone, an addition to the Galaxy Fold rival, which has an external screen too small to cope with all tasks.

There are also disadvantages here, like the predisposition to scratches of Mate XS.It is true that it has a foil applied over the original screen, but I still had to take care of what surfaces I put, because it has screen all over its outside. The edges are reasonably thin, the hinge is well built and I like that we have a "quotor" that we can grab the device, reminiscent of Lenovo Yoga tablets or some erection.I also had a skeleton protection in the test, but in the presence of the adhesive, if you give it down it is not very useful after.

Display

The big screen has 8 inches and is a bright OLED, with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels.Once folded stay with a 6.6 -inch amoled, perfectly usable as any phone on the market.Unpack you receive a square screen with 1: 1 appearance, a suitable format to read, books or emails. The movies can look weird with two black bars up and down, but the games are well framed and scaled from what I saw, at least asphat 9 was.

You may be wondering how to feel the folding of the screen. It is only observed with the extinguished screen, but not when you look at content naturally. We reached 471 luxury, so we have a pretty bright screen and well calibrated colors, wide viewing angles and contrast ok including in the sun.

Hardware

Benchmarks/temperature

Let's see how we are performing. We are somewhere between Galaxy S10+ and Huawei Mate 30 Pro, a visible thing in Antutu 8 for example. At Geekbench 5 we reach the 9th place, curiously exceeding the Huawei P40 Pro and the Galaxy S20 series.Only Snapdragon 865 phones compete in this test.

And at the GPU test I stayed OK, with the 13th place, with 3dmark Slingshot Extreme, in which I was almost equal to Galaxy Fold.It holds itself as a performance and should not have sucks in the next year and even after.

It was not bad at all at the temperature tests, with 35.2 degrees Celsius at gaming and 37.2 degrees in benchmarks, so it is not the case of overheating.

Battery

The 4500 mAh battery was seriously put to work and is an interesting one, with two 2250 mAh segments. It's a big plus and the fast charging at 55W.At the video playback test we reached 11 hours and 49 minutes, 23 minutes below Galaxy Fold, but exceeding the Galaxy S20.The continuous use was a little more impressive, with 11 hours and 34 minutes.I exceeded Galaxy Fold by 20 minutes, but also Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 Ultra.Huawei P40 Pro+ E with only 12 minutes more generous.

As an idea, the difference between the playback test with the closed and open screen is only 30 minutes, so insensitive (in favor of the folded one). The loading seemed excellent for a device so large and full of technology: 30 minutes means 84%, and after only 15 minutes you reach 47%.Full loading is done in 52 minutes.

SOUND

Huawei Mate XS doesn't want to be a powerhouse on the acoustic and opt for a single speaker located down.I would not say that it beats records or shines, but the volume is high and we have as much as possible. At the gaming test we reached 98.4 DBA, a little over OnePlus 8. We do not have audio jack, if you ask.

The room

Huawei Mate XS review după o lună de utilizare: pliabilul business care te scapă de extra dispozitive

In the room things are simple, because we have a quad room in the back, which also serves as a selfie room. There is a main 40 MP sensor here, with F/1.8 and PDAF opening, along with an 8 megapixel telephoto camera with optical stabilization and 3X optical zoom and 5x hybrid, plus a 16 MPs with Autofocalization and a 3D TOF sensor.for Bokeh. There is no missing the Leica optics, dual dual tonne flash and 4K shooting at 30 fps.

I made photo samples in Timisoara and Bucharest with this foldable phone.I got photos during the day that are pleasing to the look, and the camera also cope with the sun in front. The colors are pleasant, but not alive how some users may prefer.Problems can occur in the first planes, as you noticed in our gallery, at that cranberries and leaves near Bega.Fortunately, we have a macro way that helps us to make more successful closets (see the leaves beaten by sunset, with irises that are excellent).

We also have a monochrome way, for those who feel inspired, but also a bokeh who precisely cut the background. The ultrawide camera does not deform the colors compared to what I caught with the main camera, and the zoom is correct and the amount of noise is reduced to 3x and 5x and even beyond 5x.I would say that it is beaten with the Huawei P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro at the Zoom chapter, which is a compliment.

See this aspect at the towers at the Begai dam.The standard pictures are 10 square meters, combining 4 pixels of the 40 MP camera. The amount of details is ok, but you can also take photos directly to 40 square meters for an impressive details number. The selfies look ok as a texture of the skin, facial hair and hair on the head, and cutting to Bokeh is well done. The red of the cheeks and the gloss of the skin sweaty from the sun are well played on our friend Kristian.

Under low light conditions I say forget about the ultrawide camera, which takes dark pictures.Generally the frames were a little darker, and the temptation to use the Night mode is high, producing excellent results. The room is doing well with the lighting pillars, it does not "bloom" them with a crown of light, and the yellow is a little warmer in night conditions than in other phones. The night zoom was of quality and the light companies were perfectly played. The architectural details are well seen.

At filming I noticed a (positive) discrepancy towards the February tests. Now the camera focuses and stabilizes much better. We have a video with some nice dogs, who approached us and were excellent with perfect focus on their face and then on the background.I also did a stabilization test by climbing a bridge and we were delighted by the result.I do not notice flicker or loss of focus, and clarity remains optimal.

We also tested the zoom at the Begai dam and here we clearly notice a few zoom thresholds, but we appreciate the colors even at the advanced zoom level, especially the green of the vegetation that many rival producers fail. The real fun starts at the Tormac samples, with moving tractors and ATVs.Even in a hot weather, the phone does not over -exposure and does not burn the filming. He reminded me of the quality filming from Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Host.

The selfie video capture is worthy of Selly, I say in the praiseworthy way, which was expected with a main room with a selfie role.Kristian's bronze is perfectly played on filming, that "skin tin" that will become a peel after the bronze being rendered with the typical glow here.

At night filming there are obvious limitations of color and clarity, especially when we are moving. You can do a decent panorama, however, and the zoom is not bad.

Connectivity

Here the phone ticks all the necessary connectivity standards, from 4G to 5G and WiFi Dual Band, plus Bluetooth 5.0.We also have USB-C 3.1 port, infrared connector, NFC, Dual Band GPS.I was pleasantly surprised at the calls, where the voice is heard excellent. We do not forget about Speedtest, in which we reached 272 Mbps download in the Orange network and over 400 Mbps at Download via WiFi in the former UPC network, the current Vodafone. At UPLOAD we have 26.9 Mbps on the 4G test.

Software/Productivity:

The phone runs Android 10 with EMUI 10.1 at this time. The experience is familiar if you have used a P30 Pro or P40 Pro lately. We rely on Appgallery for applications and the most left Homescreen is a news, shortcut and useful information (Today page takes place by Google). This Mate XS focuses on the collaborative work.It has functions like many Window, Pop Up windows and Multi Screen Collaboration. You can make mirroring with its screen on Huawei laptops and you can split screen and have floating windows on the screen.

We also have the Always on Display, but also the famous Unlock stores. On the security side we receive a side fingerprint reader, fast and precise. We also have a special security at the mickernel level, arrived with EMUI 10.1.

The biggest plus of Mate XS is the ability to move to an application on the closed screen at one on the open screen, without lag and instantly warming it to the new display paradigm.Huawei also puts a special app scalating menu, in which you can choose the ideal scaling for each application. To get to Split Screen you have a special side menu from which you choose the applications and from there you trigger a floating window. My only regret is that you cannot resize the windows in which you divide the screen, at least in the open screen version.

We also receive gesture-based browsing, which we used from the first phone setup, with swipes for home, back and recent. We do not forget about optimiser, which cleanses memory, storage, walks at battery and consumption, blocked numbers and also offers scanning viruses via Avast.

Appgallery

You probably already know this time we don't have Google Play Store or Google Services on New Huawei terminals, but we have Huawei Appgallery. This is the own Huawei applications store, which includes 600 Romanian applications and is updated weekly with many international applications. It comes pre -installed on the phones and we also have a Moreapps, a solution developed by a community of developers and which includes a lot of applications and resources.

You can find it in Appgallery and it can help you find the top media applications and install them on the phone. He agrees the sources of apps and refers to Pure APK or the web version.

MOREAPPS

Moreappps is easy to install, intuitive and includes categories such as entertainment, social media, navigation, banking, education. We also have sorting depending on the popularity of the application and alphabetical, plus sharing option.Compared to our last test on Moreaps, we now have a special gaming area, where you find a lot of games.

Here are some of the most unloaded software and games in Appgallery/Moreapps:

Phone Clone

Remember the Phone Clone, the application with which you transfer the data from the old phone to the new one and which I wrote here. You can transfer applications, photos and other important data. The process is simple and involves the download and opening of Phone Clone on both devices. It can be used on other Android and iPhone phones.

The special functions of the phone include Huawei Share, which allows high-speed transfers between phones and laptops, but now allows transfers between 1+8 devices, including phones, laptops, smart speakers or tablets.

We also have Multi Screen Collaboration, which appeared with EMUI 10 and allows you to make mirroring with its phone screen on a laptop reaching an NFC tag below that notebook keyboard. You can also make Drag and Drop with files and take calls on the respective laptop.

Another interesting function is Cross Device Photo Gallery, through which you can access pictures between platforms. If you have pictures on a smartphone and other images on the laptop, this type of connectivity will allow you to browse and look through all the files on a single screen. It just has to be connected to the same WiFi and ID Huawei network.

conclusions

Okay, we are at the second review of this phone, only we have better cemented impressions.I used it for a month and forgot about any need for tablet.I see the product as one for the businessman and even as a replacement or laptop companion, especially if you have a matebook. You are practically receiving an opened 8 -inch screen phone, which is converted to 6.6 -inch smartphone as needed. You have a very caring load, you have 5G, a box that does not bother and does not feel a room on the extent of the P30 Pro, maybe even 30 Pro.The performance is kept well, and the battery and connectivity were at height. We also have multiple collaborative and productivity and security functions.

What could be improved?A screen protection, stereo speakers, better closeup focus and should be mentioned that we have a massive terminal, about 300 grams, so you have to be prepared to carry such a thing. This is a business product, without too many rivals on the market and that replaces your need for tablet, maybe also a laptop, being a capable and powerful smartphone. The mechanism of the hinge is among the most solid and the format is the most versatile seen so far.
