It is increasingly difficult to obtain a driving license in Romania. Candidates wait even 3 months to be scheduled for the driving test.

Police representatives blame the pandemic and the small number of examiners. Meanwhile, candidates forget what they've learned and fail both in the gym and on the course.

Carolina finished driving school in July in Ilfov. She was scheduled for the practical test only 3 months later. In order not to forget what he learned, he paid for several additional driving sessions.

Carolina, candidate for the driving test: "On July 30, I had my last driving lesson, the legislation, the classroom, I gave it on August 5, respectively, the schedule for the route was given to me on October 5, which it seems to me a rather long term because I have to take some extra hours to remember - I'm a beginner and it's a stressful situation".

Liviu was in the same situation, who completed the driving school also in Ilfov and is now waiting to be scheduled on the route.

Getting a driving license is getting harder in Romania. The reason why candidates wait 3 months for the exam

Liviu Dinu, candidate for the driving test: "Two and a half to three months, that's how it is here at Ilfov. Honestly, I finished school 2-3 weeks ago and I haven't driven at all and I'm not used to it anymore."

All over the country, candidates wait two months on average to be able to take the exam. The worst is in Hunedoara, Neamţ and Suceava, where the students stayed for three months until the test.

Costel Ban, Driving Instructor: "In Bucharest, the appointments took about a month, but in Ilfov again, it took two and a half three months, after the student took the class. It's a lot, forget it practically, he can forget the benchmarks that are given to him, he forgets his abilities".

The delay in the exams was primarily caused by the pandemic, the officials claim. Immediately after the end of the state of emergency, when the exams resumed, more than 100 thousand candidates were rescheduled for the practical test, which led to an increase in the waiting period for new candidates.

Retirements, vacations or illness of employees with SARS-COV-2 also messed up the exams.

According to the statistics, in the first 6 months of 2021 the number of candidates for the practical and theoretical tests was considerably higher than last year. A little over 50 percent of them managed to pass.
