Romanians have it harder than ever: the numbers that show the reality

The last year was one full of difficulties for ordinary Romanians. There have been price increases in the chain, and purchasing power has decreased significantly.

According to the data of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), this year's price increases in Romania are the highest in the last 13 years.

The numbers look worse than in 2008

In 2008, the inflation rate was 7.85%, according to the series of data provided by Statistics. In October 2021, the average price increase was 7.9%.

Food prices rose an average of 5.25% (from 4.2% in September), pushing the consumer price index up to 7.9%, well above the average estimate of 7.05%.

However, we must also mention the fact that, globally, things are at least as bad. The global index of prices for food products increased in September, for the second month in a row, reaching the highest level in the last ten years, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced last week.

In September 2021, this index increased to 130 points, the highest level recorded after September 2011, 1.2% above the level recorded in August of this year and 32.8% higher than in September 2020.

Wheat prices registered a 4% advance compared to August and a 41% advance compared to September of last year, due to limited availability for export amid strong demand.
